Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Answering Your Questions about MRI Services

To help you feel comfortable with the MRI procedure and know what to expect during the exam, we've compiled the following frequently asked questions and answers:

How long will the exam take?
The MRI exam will take approximately 30 to 60 minutes.

Will I feel anything?
No, you will not. There is no pain, vibration or unusual sensation associated with an MRI scan. The equipment will produce a mild tapping sound during the exam.

How is the MRI performed?
You will be asked to lie down on a table, and a technologist will position you comfortably. The table will then slide into the magnet, and you will be asked to remain still during the examination.

What do I need to do during the exam?
You don't need to do anything. Just lie on the exam table and relax. You will be free to read or sleep during the exam, as long as you remain still.

What should I expect after my exam?
You will be able to leave right after your exam. You should schedule an appointment with your treating physician three to five days after your MRI scan. Results and further treatment options will be discussed during that visit.

What does an MRI scan look like?
MRI scans create images that look a lot like conventional X-rays. However, they provide much more detailed information for interpretation by the physician and radiologist.

What if I have more questions?
Just ask. Your physician or MRI technologist will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
